How to Starve Oral Bacteria of Sugars that Let Them Grow

From the time you were a small child, you heard your mother and father tell you that sugar will rot out your teeth. You were probably taught to avoid candies, cakes, and other sweets based on the fear of what would happen to your teeth.

As it turns out, your parents were right. Sort of. Technically, it is not the sugar itself that causes tooth decay, but the bacteria that live in your mouth. As these bacteria go through their normal biological processes, they release a number of compounds, some of which are acidic and promote tooth decay.

These bacteria thrive on sugars, meaning that the more sugar you have in your mouth, the more they will multiply and release the compounds that damage your teeth.

Fortunately, you can do a few things to keep these bacteria populations at bay. And, the good news is that you don't necessarily have to give up eating everything you like-simply take a few precautions along the way.

Reducing the Sugar Level in Your Mouth

Obviously, a great way to starve these bacteria of the sugar they need is to avoid eating sugary foods in the first place. This has the added benefits of helping you watch your calories, and keeping your insulin levels at a moderate level.

However, if you feel that you just have to have that piece of pie, you can still help fight tooth decay. Simply make sure that you thoroughly rinse out your mouth after you have finished with your snack. This will help remove the sugars upon which the bacteria thrive.

If you are able, brushing your teeth after enjoying a sugary snack would be best. This will help reduce even further the levels of sugar in your mouth. However, if you are not able to brush, a vigorous rinsing will be almost as good.
